The story behind søren k

The Black Diamond, the extension to the Royal Library situated by the waterfront of Copenhagen Harbour, opened to the public on September 14th 1999, and so did søren k. The owner group at the time were the owners of Spisehuset Rust and the café Pussy Galore’s Flying Circus, both located in Nørrebro. Together they created a restaurant which both gastronomically and ambient-wise matched the rigorous and clear style of the house itself, created by the Århus-based architectural firm Schmidt, Hammer og Lassen. As was typical for the time, the restaurant opened with a gastronomic dogma - The Fond-less Kitchen, and just as typical for the time  they called the restaurant "søren k", named after Søren Kierkegaard - of course.

Other significant restaurant christenings from that time is alberto k og formel b - and all three have managed to survive the trend and stand as icons of stability through the 00ies. In the first 3-4 months after opening søren k received rather good reviews from the Copenhagen food critics .... a bit too good perhaps? In 2001 søren k made the Conde Nast Travelers top 100 restaurants off the world.

Søren k became the centre point of all gastronomic activity in the Royal Library. Øieblikket espressobar was established not long after the opening of the building. And catering for conferences and meetings increased when The Black Diamond established itself as a well-suited conference facility. The canteen, also catered for by søren k, found its current form as a combined canteen for both library users and staff. Some important mile stones can be found to the right.

Fitter for fight then ever!
